When most people think of chiropractic care, they often imagine chiropractors can only help with back pain. However, you may be surprised to learn that chiropractors can also help you with a wide range of ailments, including Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN).
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a long-term disorder that affects a significant amount of people each year and can result in either chronic or intermittent pain. While there is no cure for TN at the moment, chiropractic care can bring tremendous relief and remove any nerve interference through a series of adjustments, and provide you with much-needed relief from Trigeminal nerve pain.
If you’re concerned about Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) affecting you, continue reading below to learn more about how chiropractic care can help manage your pain and how Harlan Chiropractic & Acupuncture can help you find relief.
What Is Trigeminal Neuralgia?
The Trigeminal Nerve is the primary nerve that provides feeling to the face, mouth, gums, forehead, and the area surrounding the eyes. It starts in the brainstem and travels through the upper neck to the base of the skull. After leaving the base of the skull, the main nerve divides into three branches: Ophthalmic (eyes and forehead), Maxillary (nose, upper lip, and jaw), Mandibular (lower lip and jaw).
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a disorder that affects the fifth cranial nerve. This painful condition occurs when the nerve’s insulating myelin layer is weakened, causing overactivity, or when the nerve is squeezed in some way.
Trigeminal Neuralgia is classified into two categories. The first and most common causes scorching feelings as well as severe shocking pains. The second category is less painful and is accompanied by burning and aching sensations.
The most common cause of Trigeminal Neuralgia is assumed to be a blood vessel pressing on the nerve near the brainstem, producing irritation to the nerve membrane. Additionally, compression of the upper cervical spine, misalignment of the jaw or skull bones, or whiplash can also cause TN.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help with Trigeminal Neuralgia?
In the early stages of experiencing symptoms, applying heat or cold packs to the sore location may help to alleviate pain. However, because continuous pressure on the nerve can cause irreversible damage, it’s critical to seek professional treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia as quickly as possible.
Because Trigeminal Neuralgia is linked to nerve disorders, chiropractic care is an increasingly popular method of treating chronic pain and can help in reducing symptoms and pain related to Trigeminal Neuralgia. Chiropractic specialists use specific and accurate adjustments to address misalignments, restore nerve function, and reduce nerve pain commonly aggravated or impaired by Trigeminal Neuralgia.
For individuals suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia, chiropractic care offers a safe and natural alternative for treating nerve pain. During treatment, a chiropractor will assist in restoring proper communication between the spinal cord, nerves, and brain by relieving compression from the brainstem and the nerves surrounding it, allowing for normal signals to pass through the body.
Not only can chiropractic care help with nerve pain, but it can also manage general health and wellness, which can help with the other health issues that might be related to Trigeminal Neuralgia.
